Ethernet stops working after liveCD

On an Insprion 1530 with a Broadcom 440x ethernet controller, I ran Ubuntu 8 as a LiveCD. Running it was OK, but after re-boot to XP, the network connection does not come on. The message displayed says no cable is connected, and there is not a light on the ethernet port. XP diags say the Broadcom 440x controller is working correctly. Any help on how to re-enable this port would be appreciated.
