A quick buying question - I'm just looking at the options on the dell site. What do you get by buying a pre-installed m1330 over a manual install of 8.10 after you wipe windows off it?
I know it will all be configured, but in terms of functionality does the factory installed option have anything extra?

If I were you, I would order the one with Ubuntu (because it's cheaper) but then do a clean install (because I like to make sure they didn't put any junk on it).

I can assure you no "junk" was put on there. If you do a clean install, you will lose media codecs and DVD support (both of which are included with the price of the Ubuntu preload).

i got a dell m1330 preinstalled with ubuntu 8.4 everything worked out of the box .. but i hated the partition setup which was imposed on me. so i didn a fresj install .. but before that i saved the special applications that came with the system like the lindvd and dell-art work and stuff.. i found them in (am not sure) /usr/share/dell .. when i reinstalled hardy everything worked save for the finger print reader. which i got to work by reinstalling thinkfinger i documented everything in my blog

although if u intend on doing a fresh install then the purpose of getting a preinstalled dell might be defeated. for me buying dellubuntu was my way of supported opensource so that dell knows that there is a market other that for linux. which i feel is a point worth making. beside why pay the Windows tax when i dont use it?

What would you have preferred in terms of the partition setup and why?
This method provides hardware diagnostics tools on the first partition (in the event you need to make a support call as you think you have bad hardware), a recovery partition as the second, OS as the third, and an extended 4th w/ swap.
