Try looking at either AmaroK (My favorite) or Songbird:
http://amarok.kde.org/
http://getsongbird.com/
I think you can get both through Synaptic. The ejecting-ipod deal sounds like it isn't configured properly in Rhythmbox - Does it eject properly when you right-click and hit 'eject' from the desktop?

On Gnome, the following player suites are said to be "better" than Rhythmbox (all except Songbird are installable with Synaptic/aptitude):
Banshee - said to have the best iPod support
Exaile - quickly growing project, quite efficient, still lacks iPod support
Songbird - Mozilla's new baby, some love it, others hate it
Listen - little-known project, but looks promising
Then there is Amarok, which has long been "the best" music player suite on Linux. But this was comparing to Rhythmbox, when Banshee was still small and before Exaile and Songbird existed. Now I'd say it's on par, but when using it in Gnome you have to load the KDE libraries, which makes startup slower and uses additional RAM.
So I'd recommend one of the above.
That said, my primary (and only) music player is Audacious... nothing beats simple efficiency ;)

Me too (in Linux anyway).
