My non Dell car charger is picked up by my laptop as non Dell so it refuses to take a charge from it. It will use it as a power supply. There must be something in the BIOS maybe that makes that check. Is it possible to disable it so that any correvt voltage PSU will charge the battery?

I have the exact same problem. No solution yet. It's weird that Dell sell non-dell car chargers on their website (e.g. from Targus and Kensington). I suppose these don't charge the laptop either.

I have a Dell 1420n
My Targus Universal adapter came w 7 tips, the # 20 for the 1420.
I had the same problem.
Resolved it by ordering a #35 tip, not supplied w the original product.
