What are you using to install it? Wine? or another commercial solution?

You should change to Windows 95 in wine. write in terminal: wincfg Then you should find it yourself

I have installed Red Alert under wine.
I cannot run the game using either ra.exe or ra95.exe
I can start by running automenu.exe from the disc.
I have to hit ESC afterwards because the game glitches and won't proceed till I do.

No soundcard is detected, the game keeps redrawing the screen and is somewhat slow.
I cannot install Aftermath, the installer hangs at the 'installing, wait a few minutes' screen.
And I had wanted more than a few minutes (about half hour).

I have tried setting WINE to win95, 98 and ME (I know the game works in those OS's).
I don't have any audio or video problems with games like Starcraft.

Aftermath is the main part I like playing, anyone know how to get it installed and fix the AV problems ?

Try with FreeRa or FreeCNC; http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/FreeRa
It's native, only you need is the data files.

That was my first stop Bekker.
Whatever is posted there does not work for me.
And I have no idea where this updated/latest version came from but it doesn't do anything.
It updated some internet stuff but not the game engine.

AI:
I thought freeCnC got shut down by Westwood, I'll have to look again.
I saw freeRA but from the screenshots it looks wrong ?! Like thae map is rotated and fonts look screwy.
I'll look into FreeCNC again.

Now I see why I didn't use freecnc, they haven't done anything.
Sourceforge is two years old and the website has no downloads.
I'll give freera another chance.
