Has anybody used Solaris 10?

Is it fast and good?
Can I run Linux apps aswell I suppose?

I started downloading it, but then I saw some screenshots at OSdir and I thought I wouldn't want to go back to Windows 95. But I'm sure it's a good OS and the desktop can probably be beautified.

You can try OpenSolaris for free and since Solaris is *nix you can most likely compile programs from Linux from source if you want to use them.

yeah, thanks for replying, I am just going to try it to have a look at it and see what it has to offer me. I'll en up back on Ubuntu tomorrow so there is probably no real point!!

and have you ever used Solaris yourself?
Yeah same thing really isnt it, its all*nix, but what would the real difference be, Its meant to run slightly slower than the linux kernel, all though I dunno much about it.

If you learn something in the process than theres always a point.

From what I heard for some techies in my area, it is suppose to run better than linux, when it is run on properitary systems. Like mine... However, they where the ones that said C++ and Visual Basic and Basic and HTML and C# aren't true programming languages...

I tried installing Solaris 8 once and that didn't work out :) According to everything I read about Linux it's the "best of breed" Unix, it was actually noted that it runs better on the SPARC's than Solaris does (which I hardly believe) but I'm sure it will not be faster on a PC slower most likely.

VB is NOT a real programming language, it's way too limited :)

I know VB sucks... for lack of a better term...

But C# and C++ are true languages and I still find myself going back to my reference materials to solve a few bugs that prevent programs from even being compiled. The beauty of Visual Studio... I hate it...

ahh right, I installed it there, took about a half hour on my Pentium D, Its running quite fast, although, practically all my hardware wont work, suppose I will have to fiddle about with it! C++ is a good language though.

During what little time I have played with OpenSolaris, I have been very impressed with the quality of their work.

C++ rocks, it's my favorite programming language. The second favorite is I'm afraid to say it Java. The reason I like it though is it's alot like VB in the sense that is fairly easy to make quick functional GUI driven programs, but it works on all platforms without you having to do anything. Very useful for writing some personal programs such as a database of CDs you got :) (been working on it on and off for the past year)

I have used solaris 10 for x86 and it is like another *nix. Seems to work well. Can't dual-boot it. My next development machine will probably be on a solaris platform.

The install was a bit difficult on my school's lab PC - removeable HDD set-up.
