You have to burn the image to a CD, using software that supports burning images. Then you have to boot to it. Ubuntu is an operating system like MAC OS X so it will not run inside of MAC OS X. You could run an operating system inside of an operating system using a virtual machine, but that is a more advanced topic.

Please don't try to install Ubuntu without first doing a lot of research or you will quickly end up with a non-working system.

The Live CD however, is always safe to try.

Please do not make duplicate threads on the same topic. If anything, it will hinder the speed in which you receive help. Any other place, you could be waiting days to get support....

I found this MAC OS guide on burning an ISO: http://www.macosxhints.com/article.php?story=20060619181010389.

It was the first result from a google search of "mac os x burn image".

Smitty burn the image in disk utility. When you open disk utility click on burn. In the box that opens choose the iso. It will tell you to insert a disk. It should a cd-r. It will burn as an image. Then you can restart holding down the "c" key. Hold down the key until the linux icon comes up. Click on it and then the arrow and you should start on the live disk.

Don't try to install until you have done a lot of reading on the Ubuntu site about installing. In fact anything you can learn first will help you. It is all out there it is just a matter of searching Google. Good luck and have fun.

Have you had any luck with burning the ISO to a CD or booting the CD?

You need to do some reading and educate yourself about linux, operating systems in general, partitioning your hard drive, and working with boot loaders before you try to install Ubuntu. Take it slow and enjoy yourself. This podcast is a great place to start: www.linuxreality.com .

If you decide that you want to give linux a try, download the live cd .iso and burn it to a cd-r in disk utility (applications -> utilities -> disk utility). Boot the live cd as other posters have instructed, but DON'T install it yet. Load Ubuntu from the live cd (that is, boot the operating system from the disk without making any changes to your computer) and see if you like it. If you want to install it, the following how-to guide is a good place to start for installing Ubuntu on macbooks, although it's getting a little dated (I'm assuming you have a mac of some sort based on where you posted the thread).

https://help.ubuntu.com/community/MacBook_Santa_Rosa

You will need to reduce the size of your OSX partition to make room on your hard drive for a new partition to install Ubuntu. OSX can do this using bootcamp, but there are other programs out there that can repartition your hard drive. Be thoughtful and careful when you do this.

Good luck!

One big problem is that we don't know if he's running an Intel or PPC mac. If it is a G3 iMac with 64mb, the live-desktop cd is out of the question. :)

So smitty4478, what are you running?

(unless I'm blind and missed it somewhere...)
