I'm thinking "brick" here. Thickness has a number of advantages:

Better ventilation, and therefore
The laptop runs cooler, and therefore
The fan can run more slowly, and therefore
The laptop can run quietly; the laptop can run a long time on a charge.
The keyboard can have more travel, which feels nicer.

I'll be running DSL-N on it, so even a 12-year-old laptop will be fine. I want a laptop in good, operating condition, battery, hard drive, and charger cable included! I want a CD drive and at least one USB port. USB 1.1 will do the job just fine.

I'm not interested in paying more than $45 US, plus whatever minor things need to be fixed (such as replacing the system clock battery,) plus whatever it costs to ship the thing.

If you have such a laptop, or know where there's one for sale, let me know.

How about 2? I have 1 Compaq Armada 1592DMT with 96MB RAM, 3GB HDD, and a 233Mhz Pentium MMX. The second one is pretty much the same except it only has 32MB RAM. The first one is running a home-rolled version of Puppy 4.0 and the second one is running Win2K. Both have batteries, AC adapters, etc. Let me know if you're interested.

Maybe try your local paper, or craigslist.

Yes, but one is already gone. Only the one with Puppy is left. If you're still interested in that one let me know.

Try looking in thrift shops such as Goodwill. They have these "Computer Works" stores that sell specifically computer stuff. I managed to pick up an AGP nVidia GeForce 6200 with 256 MB RAM for $ 24.95 or so, to give you an idea of what prices are like there. The proceeds are used for training people so that they can be productive members in society.
