Issue with multimedia

All right, I really am at a loss here. After Google searches on help for all the media programs and for help with media on Ubuntu I am not really sure what to do any more.

The only sound I can get from Ubuntu is the alerts from Pidgin and from Firefox. Everything else is silent. I've installed all the packages I needed to, I fiddled with the audio settings (pulseaudio, ALSA, etc.) and even tried running the programs in Konsole to see if it was an issue with them.

So far I haven't had any luck, does anyone know what the problem is?

Double check all the sliders in alsamixer (or gnome-alsamixer if you have it installed), and make sure all volumes are high enough, particularly the master and PCM.

It is installed and all the sliders are on high volume.
