M.U.G.E.N. sound problem

I have a problem when I run the game MUGEN. There isn't any sound at all. When I run it in console it says this:
Loading button config for P1 joystick.
Loading button config for P2 joystick.
Initializing keyboard.
Initializing sound...failed to init hardware.
Initializing graphics.
M.U.G.E.N test ver 2002.04.14

I read from another topic that running alsamixer and enabling every option would work, but I only have two categories in it. Master and Capture.

I'm running Ubuntu 8.10.

It turns out that after I shut off Firefox, the sound came back.
Edit: Nevermind, that doesn't work. There's still no sound even after shutting off Firefox now.

someone I know has a sound problem with their mugen and I want to know what the problem and solution is. It will play an mp3 format song until the very end and it will repeat the end over and over and over and it will also make it sound horrible. I don't know if this is a bug, a problem with the looping script, or what. Can you please tell me what I can do?
