Hi all,
I still have my old Imac G3 as described on the following link: http://www.everymac.com/systems/apple/imac/stats/imac_ab.html
No upgrade done eversince I bought this then only now putting the MacOs 9.2.1 on it. Originally came with MacOs 8.5
Now I was looking for an alternative linux version and choose the Xubuntu Alternate due to not having any upgrade on this machine.
When booting up from the CD it tells me that the root tree can't be found.
Is this because I still have the MacOs 9.2.1 on the machine or do I need to partition the whole harddrive first ?
No matter what I do, I still getting the same message back and hereafter the command prompt.
Anyone that can help me out ?
I would like to use any kind of U(X)buntu version before I give up my strenght to throw this piece of art away :)
Looking forward for any assistance on this matter.

Could you give more info on the command prompt (what it looks like), the message or menu you see and how soon you get it, does the keyboard work - just to clear up where it is sticking and what works.
Also how much RAM is in the Imac - the original 32 MB woud be a handicap, and what size HD is it, you need around 3GB for Xubuntu + Macos9.
Macos9 should not stop booting the Alternate CD, and you should be able to resize the partition and make space for Xubuntu from the installer.

Thanks pxwpxw for your reply.
I will check back again.
Well I didn't upgrade the Imac then only installing the Os 9.2.1 on it.
Still have the 32 MB on RAM and Hard Drive on 4.0 GB
Might be to remove the OS 9.2.1 and put back to 8.5 as how it was before ?
The Live version of Ubuntu didn't work as I think it was on the RAM that was way too less :(
What I will do is initiate the Hard Drive and let Xubuntu 8.10 Alternate on it and will let you know the outcome.

Hi all, I checked back again and when holding down the C and do the install I am getting the following message which I don't know what to do:
Done. Copying OF device tree ... Can't allocate initial device-tree chunk = 900 at $SRRO: ff81ab68$SRR1: 0000b030
Hereafter I have the option to enter any command but don't know what.
By the way I mentioned earlier that I didn't upgrade this device and it is in the same status as how I bought it since back then.
Hopefully you can help me out.

32mb of ram is what is hurting you.
About all you might be able to try is to install the server-version, and *maybe* pour a very light X on top to just run a simple commandline environment with xterms.
I might find that fun, but for most it would be a hair-pulling experience. :) Unless you upgraded the ram, I don't think it would be worth it.

Thanks stream303, if this is about the RAM I can easily use the Ubuntu instead as I am not fund of the Xubuntu. Thought due to RAM I was able to run the Xubuntu which isn't. I can find a cheap RAM for this device secondhand and will give it a shot.
Thanks.

:KSThis post can be closed.
I will look for an advance Mac with more RAM on it.
