Not sure if this is the right forum or not so don't yell at me :)

I was wanting to start to give back in a different way the the Ubuntu community. I was thinking about getting involved in development for Ubuntu. I am a bit confused on how to go about it and which way to go.

I know that there is a Ubuntu-devel channel on IRC and a ubuntu-motu. My first question is what is the differance? Second, I really have no experence in packaging or programming but I am very willing to learn anything. I am hoping that there are people that are willing to guide me in the right direction :) Lastly, is it a problem that I don't know any programming?

Thanks to everyone who comments and reads this!

first have a look at this: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ContributeToUbuntu

great to hear you want to contribute back.
there are so many ways you can contribute.
helping in this forum, documentation, wiki, language translation and software/hardware testing are some that doesn't even need detailed knowledge in programming and compiling codes.
and it doesn't even need to be ubuntu specific, for example, if you like gnome, you can help contribute to gnome project which will eventually benefit ubuntu and all linux/gnome community.
for me, i m a software developer myself and i like kubuntu but KDE4 has not been working too well, so i decide to do some bug fixes for KDE.
like many advices, start small and specific. once you get the hang of it, you will gain confidence for yourself and also from the community. from there, you can get to know more and explore further.

Pardon my next question :| But Don't I need to know something about programming if I am going to do bug fixes? I am asking because I don't understand. The site says no special knowledge required but I don't know how I can help then. Again pardon my question, this is all new to me

Without programming knowledge you can report bugs at launchpad.net

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Launchpad_(website)
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+bug/1

You can also join http://brainstorm.ubuntu.com

You can join Ubuntu release parties, here's an old example :
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/HardyReleaseParties

You can join a local Linux Group (LUG) :
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linux_User_Group
http://www.linux.org/groups/
to share knowlegde, and have fun.

:)

Just to name a few things.
