I'm afraid to partition because I have lots of data on my vista partition

It's not so weird. Just click 'manual' and format the way you want. It won't disturb your Vista data if you shrink it's partition. To be extra safe, use Vista's disk management tool (http://vistahelp.blogspot.com/2007/02/resize-partitions-with-vista-disk.html) to shrink the partition and leave the freed space unformatted. Works best (quickest) if you defrag Windows first.

just select the first option and you'll be fine. defrag vista first.

You've clicked 'Guided - Use largest continuous free space,' and the bar at the top is showing you the before and after of the free space. Not really too weird, right?

As you see, my other partition is already taking up 88% of the harddisk space, so I find it pretty odd that "use free space" should show linux mint having 100% of the harddisk

Go "Manual". You should ALWAYS have a backup of your data!!!

its probably just a bug in the visualization of the program, but yeh, manual is the way to go.
