What chipset model does your ethernet use?

You have to download the drivers either way and copy to CD or flash disk etc.

all I know that it's a broadcom one but not sure which one

That does not really help. If you have a ubuntu livecd you can boot that up, open a terminal and type "lspci -v" and it will tell you the exact chipset model number. Alternatively provide your Motherboard make & model & we will look it up for you.

You could also try this, http://broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/determine_driver.php

I'm of to bed. Once you know the chipset model go here http://broadcom.com/support/ethernet_nic/downloaddrivers.php and get the correct driver.

The easiest way to find the driver you need is to go to the laptop manufactures website and download the driver from there.

Those drivers are not always up to date, after a while they don't bother anymore. They get them from the chipset manufacturer anyway but after aw hile stop updating them which the chipset manufacturer still does. Each to his own.
