image viewer with read-ahead?

My default image viewer "Eye og Gnome" does not preload the next image in a directory, which makes bbrowsing through images a bit quirky. The family Windows XP machine is a lot nicer in this respect, the XP image viewer (whatever its name is) has this look-ahead feature, and switch to the next picture witout any noticeble delay.

Is there such a viewer available for my Ubuntu machine?
