What do you want to do with it?
I got an old pentium III for free, and I bought a SATA PCI card and 3 250 GB HDDs for $300 (this was a couple of years ago). It is still all I need as a file server. So I guess the first thing to do is find an old computer that someone is trying to get rid of. The most important thing in servers is usually I/O throughput, which I achieved with a dedicated SATA card. I should also mention that I was lucky in that the case had space to mount 4 HDDs, so you should make sure your case is spacious.

i just want to know how much all the hardware cost. minimum cost. the Ubuntu Server is for our company actually. we're providing and implementing Ubuntu to everyone. btw, i'm from Brunei. so yeah, i just need to know how much all the hardware cost. also, what's the minimum specs of the Ubuntu Server? and all the file server, print, dns, dhcp and etc, i'm gonna put in one server. more like, Complete Server. so, thank you. =)

i just want to know how much all the hardware cost. Why don't you ask your favourite hardware supplier and/or vendor?
the Ubuntu Server is for our company actually. And how big is your company? How many employees? What services do you expect to run on that server?
i just need to know how much all the hardware cost. This depends on your answers regarding my questions above? Are we talking about building a server for a really large enterprise with several thousands of users, terabytes of files, redundant disks, tape backup, storage, high-speed network cards, and so on .... Or are we talking about a small file server for 10 people? You didn't tell that, so the "right answer" could be anywhere between 10 $ to 10 million $
also, what's the minimum specs of the Ubuntu Server This is for "validated hardware":

... but in theory a PC with 256 MB RAM could do for a few users. Again: it so totally depends on what you are trying to build here and for how many people??

The minimum cost? I know LOTS of people who throw out computers as garbage that are more than powerful enough to run an Ubuntu server. So, minimum cost = free I guess.

The problem is that you are not saying what kind of server do you have in mind. I'll assume that you mean home server that handles wireless, DHCP, routing, some file sharing, torrentflux maybe, printers. To run such a config for 10 clients the lowest you could go is free you can use any old hardware laying around, if you would want to buy all the equipment, i think 100$-150$ for used, 250-300 for new, with 1Tb non-redundant storage space, wireless, 1gb ram, atom processor.

I have set up a cheap file server / torrent slave
Cheap Pentium 3 computer , £20 (could get this for free if you know where to look)
PCI sata / raid card <£5
500gb Sata hard drive £30
total cost <£55 could do this cheaper if you put you put your mind to it.
of course if you want more features you would need to have a bit more powerfull machine
