View Full Version : [ubuntu] Weird window switches

When i use my system it sometimes randomly switches to another window, in most cases when i am writing text into a box in firefox, thunderbird, amsn - does not matter. I'm almost sure i do not press a wrong key or something like that, but it happens mainly in combination with capital letters (with the shift key).

First I had it on my notebook and thought it has to do with the touch pad. But then i also switched my home pc (Desktop) to ubuntu and had same problems. It happens ~ 2-3x per day. Did someone of you also recognize this?

I have now enabled compiz to see if it disappears, but I prefer my pure Gnome system without gimmicks (Ubuntu Intrepid, with latest updates)

keyboard layout is sg-latin1 (swiss german)

since it usually happens with combination of keys ie: capitalization, it sounds like a "short cut key combination" to me, but do not know how to fix it, just giving you and avenue to look at.

could be, but how han i find the app or setting which is responsible?

what i forgot in first post: sometimes i also scrolls windows, mainly console windows (and not only to the last line, which also happens when you just press a key)

oh and this: firefox sometimes changes zoom to the largest possible, just happened now when writing this text :-(

and: enabling compiz did not solve the problem.

Try System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts to check.

Try System > Preferences > Keyboard Shortcuts to check.
They are all at their default values. I did not found any actions matching this behaviors..

My un-educated guess would be that Compiz is actually causing those windows switches. I've had a go around with this as well. Even though I see you tried enabling Compiz later, I'm still thinking that Compiz is doing it. Go into System > Control Center > CpmpizControl Settings Manager, look at any effects that are enabled. Check the shortcut keys for the enabled effects. In my case, I found edge flipping enabled that caused some weird switches to happen.

No. It was definitively not activated. I did not even had a 3D-aware graphics adapter (better to say: driver :( ) when the problem first appeared..

Sorry, guess I was no help at all. I have never seen that behavior without a compositor running. I wish I knew something else that would help.

My 2 cents.

As you know, the normal switch windows sequence is alt-tab.

Flacky or stick alt or tab key on your keyboard?

Just a thought, I've had weird things happen to me because of sticky keys.

I also thought at sticky keys. I also have a wireless keyboard. But my notebook does the same, so it cannot only depend on the keyboard.

When writing this post i had another problem: I was just typing the word "monitor", and when i pressed the "i", i saw a popup menu opening and closing in the upper edge so fast that i was not able to see its content (and its context). From that moment Alt-Tab did not work anymore and i was not able to close Firefox tabs anymore by mouse - only by Alt-F4. Now, some minutes later, Alt-Tab is ok again, but new Firefox windows still show strange behaviors (clicking buttons from the link list does not work). And clicking into text fields.. I wonder that i am able to still write this text.

Compiz is not enabled anymore. I will try now using another keyboard. I will tell you the changes..

Happy new year for everybody.. :-)

No more problems anymore with the new keyboard. Sorry for wasting your time.

Problem with my notebook is still stere but i guess it has to do with the touchpad. But unbelievable that two similar problems go to different causes :(

Anyway.. Thanks to everybody of you
