For ubuntu 8.10... which I am new to.

My wireless works with the default 2.6.27-9 kernel... but I was having some trouble with hibernating. So I wanted to compile the latest kernel 2.6.28 and when I installed it, wireless stopped working. bcm43 seems to exits... but does not work. Also I used to have a wireless STA driver in the hardware drivers, but that disappeared. The network controller does not seem to be active... Here is the output of lspci -v:

02:00.0 Network controller: Broadcom Corporation BCM4312 802.11b/g (rev 01)
Subsystem: Hewlett-Packard Company Device 137c
Flags: bus master, fast devsel, latency 0, IRQ 16
Memory at db600000 (64-bit, non-prefetchable) [size=16K]
Capabilities: <access denied>

Any ideas?

Run your Ubuntu from kernel 2.6.27-9 and type in terminal:
lsmodand post output.

Start from new kernel and type in terminal:
lsmodand post output.

Were you trying to use the wl module or the b43? If you were trying to use the wl module, you will have to compile the module manually because it does not come with the kernel.

If you are using b43, are you sure that the module is loaded? You should check:

lsmod|grep -e b43 -e ssband see that it is there. You should also check:

dmesg|grep b43to see if there are any messages about the module.

Doesnt matter to me which module I use... as long as it works. It works both ways when I use the default kernel. Why do I need to recompile the wl module if I use it? And where would I get it so I can compile it?

There is no output from either:

lsmod|grep -e b43 -e ssb
dmesg|grep b43

Here is the output from 2.6.27-9

You will need to use the wl driver. I forgot that you said that you have a 4312 rev 01 card. You will need to compile the driver from source. I have not had a chance to try to compile it from source for the 2.6.28 kernel yet to see if the patch from 2.6.27 will work or if something else needs to be done.

What functionality does the patch provide?
