I once struggled greatly to find a remotely-usable video editor for Ubuntu, and just want all people new to Ubuntu to realise that Kdenlive is a very good program. Get it.

Thanks for the heads up. I generally don't have much trouble with avidemux (gtk+). But it's always good to find a better video editor.

Now if only there was one on the scale of virtualdub.

Thanks King,

This seems to be what I have been looking for. I just installed Blender 3D on advice from another thread, but that don't look like what I needed. I just want something that I can edit videos, cut, trim etc.

Have you been in the blender Video Sequence Editor (VSE) ? Start blender and press 2 times CONTROL + ARROW RIGHT. This gives you the blender part where you can add video and audio, cut, add effects, scale, overlay , ... .
It is not a Windows Movie Maker clone. It is much better than that (IPO curves, keyframing, nodes editor, ...)

Thanks, I got that far, but couldn't figure out how in import a video to work with.

Agreed, but download version 0.7, the version in the 8.10 repositories is old and not as good.

Better still, wait until the New Year as 0.7.1 should be out with less bugs! Kdenlive is rather a new project, but promises to be a first class video editing program.

Kino is also good for a basic DV editor.

It is explained here (http://wiki.blender.org/index.php/Manual/Using_VSE). BTW there is a lot of documentation for Blender. It is worth to take some time to get the hang on an editor. I learned kino, cinelerra, kdenlive, blender vse. They are all different. Blender VSE and cinelerra require some more learning time but you get a lot back for your time. Kdenlive is a good compromise between learning time and possibilities and kino is basic but common used to capture footage.
