Recently I was given an old HP computer, Celeron 700 with onboard Intel everything and 128 MB of RAM. I tried every light distribution I could find to make this thing usable. Debian net install, AntiX, TinyMe and a few others. Everything I tried either ran too slow or did not have much functionality.

I was looking through the list of operating systems for old computers last night and saw TinyFlux and thought to myself, why not I have tried everything else? Much to my surprise, it installed without a hitch and all of my hardware worked perfectly! I was almost in shock when I saw that the ViewSonic monitor I am hooked up to was set up with the right resolution and refresh rate! No distribution has ever set up this monitor properly before.

The installed system is quick and responsive and the default look was attractive. Multimedia playback was possible! Flash was installed and working with YouTube, Shoutcast pls files played and these sites were even bookmarked by default!

The choice of default applications is good, everything is light but very functional. The kernel that is used does not have a problem with the BIOS being old as most light distributions do. TinyFlux is the most well thought out distribution I have ever tried for salvaging old computers. Everything works as it should so I am not going to go update crazy and break this install. Memory use is excellent.

If you have an old machine that is just gathering dust or you just can't find anything that will run on it, I highly recommend giving TinyFlux a try!

Edit: You can find TinyFlux downloads here.

TinyFlux is the best distro I have found so far for salvaging old computers. It is so nice because it is so well set up from the start. TinyFlux is definitely a keeper!

I tried a straight run without any options and ended up with the common split screen problem. I had the same split screen problem while trying to install Ubuntu 6.06.

Newer Ubuntu distros refuse to install on this including Xubuntu with the alternate installer.

I gave the VGA option a try and I am stuck in a loop with the Graphic card and monitor configuration on a Chembook 5033. It keeps trying to configure the video and keeps leading me to select the same options over and over again.

DSL will install on it, but I need more functionality what DSL offers, same for Puppy Linux. I tried Slitaz, it worked but could not install it , the install instructions were all in French even though I selected English and there was some kind of error. Fluxbuntu 7.10 didn't install at all.

These are one of those laptops that seemingly any form of Ubuntu can't be installed on.

Specs are Pentium II 400 Mhz K6 163 MB RAM (I can't add more ram), and about a 6 GB hard drive.

So I tried again to just do the straight install and I am at the split screen problem again...if I can resolve the split screen ...then maybe I can progress further.
