5 Gb HD and 512 RAM should be reasonable. You can probably do with less but that should be a good start.

You do not need a HD if you just run the iso.

System requirements - for the host or the guest?

Guest, as specified on (K)ubuntu official site. Host, whatever the host minimum requirements are (depends on the OS), plus at least what the guest needs.
