Hi.

Check this out: http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/upgrading

I think you need the alternate CD - if you don't have fast internet

Your home directory should keep unchanged, but it is advised to make a backup.

But I remind you: If it ain't broken, don't fix it.

You have a few options.

1. if you have a fast Internet connection, you can upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 simply by typing:

sudo update-manager -c

and selecting the option to upgrade online.

2. if you get the 8.10 alternate CD (http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate) (not the regular live CD), it will have an option to upgrade your system without being connected to the Internet.

3. copy all the contents of your /home folder to somewhere else, then use the 8.10 live CD to do a completely fresh installation of Ubuntu. When it's done, replace copy your old /home into the new system. You will probably need to fix some permissions issues if you do this, but someone here can help you with that.

Note: if you do a clean install of Ubuntu, you can avoid having this problem again in the future by keeping /home on a separate partition (http://www.psychocats.net/ubuntu/separatehome). This makes it very simple to upgrade the system without having to worry about your personal settings and files.

I have upgraded once by being connected by DSL and clicking "upgrade" and waited a long time, but it worked and preserved all my files and settings. It worked fine for me.

Personally, I wonder if it isn't just much easier to pop in the new CD and install it, but you must have backed up your data.

I only keep photos on my hard drive now anyway, I have my documents and emails at google.

BTW, check out Kiwilinux, Ubuntu that has every little extra also in it, so no downloading flash, etc. For what it's worth.
