Since switching from connecting to my university network to a TalkTalk modem (Huawei MT882), my install of ubuntu locks up at random intervals. It can vary from lasting for 30 seconds to a couple of minutes. It appears to be completely random, firefox doesn't need to be running, though it does seem to occur more often if it is and firefox is usually the first program to lock, followed by other programs and then the entire OS.

I connect with an ethernet cable.

My connection with TalkTalk can be pretty sporadic to say the least.. Is it possible that random short breaks in the connection can cause things to lock up if a program is waiting for data? Looking at the network activity graph, it does seem to drop data rate to almost 0 when it locks. The locks don't happen in Windows though, is it possible to stop it in Ubuntu? Except for perhaps by changing ISPs?
