my computer makes a crackling noise when it's supposed to be playing music or audio to a movie. it is responsive to the volume controls but won't play the item. please help?

Which version of Ubuntu are you using? Does the problem persist if you attempt to listen with headphones? Do you get the same results when viewing flash content on YouTube or movie trailers at apple.com/trailers?

i use 8.10 and there is no change with head phones. i am able to get a system beep at begin of line .(ex.) but no sound except static otherwise

Have you checked system > preferences > sound?
You can play with your sound settings and test them directly.
It solved the problem for me, at least for music and movies on my computer, not for sound in firefox e.g. youtube.

The last post in that link killed my audio completely...I don't even get clacking sound any more.
