Hello,

My sister got the game SPORE for Christmas. It doesn't work on her Windows XP.

I'm trying to get the game to work on my 64-bit Ubuntu 8.10 so we can play the darn thing. I install it through wine, but after a long installation it doesn't load. I keep getting this error:

"The game cannot start.
There seems to be a problem contacting the license server. Ensure your Internet connection is active and try again in a few minutes."

I reinstalled Spore, this time getting an install window for DirectX 9. That installation failed. The EA Download manager doesn't work either.

Anyone know what to do? [or know if it even is possible to run this game?]

Any help is appreciated!

Has anyone been able to install it on a 64-bit version of Intrepid Ibex?

ive been reading about this......

since you bought it legally, go to piratebay or something and get a "nice" version of it from there....

so much better...

just my opinion

I'm sorry to say I asked this question last week and no-one came up with a resolution :( It looks pretty futile sadly! If you find a way, let me know!

Have you checked the how-to's in the Wine AppDB entry for the game:
http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=application&iId=8185

According to the wine website, it should work. I'll try installing it without the directX thing or the EA download manager.

EDIT: The game still won't load, and I still keep getting that annoying "cannot connect to server" error. [If I figure something out, I'll post it!]

MORE EDIT: AHA!!! I think I know my problem! I'm installing my graphics driver as I type! CHECK OUT THIS POST (http://mydailytech.com/post/nvidia-and-ati-drivers-for-linux/)

This is good too :) (http://mydailytech.com/post/spore-on-linux/)

I would also check in System > Administration > Hardware drivers to make sure all your drivers are correctly installed

UPDATE: SPORE WOOOORKS! My only problem now is sorting out the graphics [getting a bunch of weird lines and colors] but otherwise it works!

The cracked .exe worked like a charm. [I know it isn;t quite legal, but hey, I have a legal copy of the CD!]

EDIT: Anyone know why the screen always goes to a 800x600 resolution? The game starts, I hear the sound and all, but the image is all screwed up [a bunch of lines and such] and when I end the program, the resolution has changed...
