I have a laptop which has an encrypted ubuntu lvm installation. For some reason when I try to boot from the xp cd, it says "checking hardware" and the screen goes blank with the harddrive light constantly active.

So I tried the cd on another laptop and the install started without any problems, but this laptop does not have an encrypted ubuntu installation.

Why is this happening and how do I install xp on the laptop again? I am selling the laptop and the buyer wanted the original software installed on it again.

Wipe the hard disk (including MBR) using a Knoppix liveCD, then try the install.

Also, boot to BIOS options and choose the option to reset to defaults.
