so you do not like windows it self, but the applications that has been written for it... interesting.

ok after very long and careful examination I have to agree.. there is nothing good about the os it self, only 3rd party projects.

yeap. an OS is as good as its software ecosystem ;)

I second that. It is a platform that allows software developers to make money on their products because of the large user base. They largely created this user base by developing standards that allowed users to exchange and transfer their work. These standards eradicated time consuming inefficiencies that resulted from having to learn new systems over and over again. The curse of originality and the resulting devotion to machine and system, and eventually to the engineer himself, was the curse of the mainframe period. If you migrated from IBM to CDC to DEC you had to learn almost everyting all over again. The PC revolution liberated the users from the whims of autocratic system administrators and computer manufacturers and made computers into tools for everybody. Microsoft consolidated and standardized software products, like text editors and spreadsheets, while creating more competition on hard ware products making them cheaper. Better a bad system on a cheap computer that everybody knows and/or can afford than a good system on propitiatory hardware that only the highly educated understand and/or can afford, cf. English vs Latin. Of course the legitimacy of this hegemony must be constantly reaffirmed while the choice of OS becomes less and less critical as the computing environment becomes more sophisticated and internet oriented. I write this post on a Linux system but XP would do as well. I remember the time that I could chat on DEC's VAX machine had not figured out to do it on its Unix system. In addition, the chat program, that was named phone, could only be used to communicate with someone if he was on a VAX but not on an IBM. 'He' because women have too much sense to get involved with such nonsense. The main advantage of MSFT is better writing, demanding less research and cognitive load from the user that wants to go on with her work. By the way, I predict that if Ubuntu becomes as successful as Microsoft more people will hate it for it.

I like Windows because it has been solid and reliable for me when I've needed a solid and reliable system.

In almost every case, where I looked to Ubuntu to come through in a clutch, it collapsed.

Most recent example: I had to make a DVD slideshow for my parents' 50th anniversary. I went to Ubuntu first...no tool to do this quickly and easily. I didn't have time to fool with Kino or Cinelerra. I went back to Vista...was able to simply drop my pics and a soundtrack into WMM and hit "automovie". I had a good DVD in under an hour.

This is one example of many for me.

This is not to say that I don't enjoy using Ubuntu for general tasks, but it doesn't really offer me anything that Windows doesn't already do.

for:
hardware support
fair stability
programs (If wine ran all windows programs (except for registry cleaners, etc, then I would not have windows:))
compatibility
because it came with my laptop:lolflag:

Basically, if wine ran all the apps I needed, windows would not even be on my system. Not only that, but my ubuntu always decays after a while.

I think that the thing most people like about it is that it's reasonably simple if you don't want to do anything big with it.
Linux is more complicated, and a challenge! :P

I've been using Vista on my Macbook for the past few days, and I'd say it's very good for browsing the web and such. Of course I have Firefox and Pidgin (AOL's client is just bleh), and in my opinion, they've got the eye-candy to the max, and I like that. :) Only thing that Peeves me so far is how much memory it uses, but I guess the memory's there for a reason.

I find Vista's animations not to be over the top, and smooth as well, such as minimizing a window.

I have yet to see if it slows down over time like XP and previous versions, so that's a work in progress.

For me, the hardware support, the games, and the fact of all the software that is out there for Windows, a lot of them are great, something Linux won't have for a long time.

Pretty much, I don't like the actual OS, but the software and games that run on it. Also it has good hardware compatibility.

Same here.

Not that I actually plat many games these days.

But this is the only reason I carry a Windows install. Which is a pity - Windows should be great. I want to like it, but right now it just sucks.

Windows works for the most part, and Windows updates to do not mess up the wireless unlike Ubuntu where twice already.... kernel updates neutered wireless on my laptop.

Another positive thing about Windows is that you can use open source products on the OS even though the OS itself is not free. XP generally has been trouble free, it works pretty much like it should.

Also kudos to Windows 2000, another fine OS for its time...in fact it still can run some modern apps OK. Vista is another matter, I really don't care for it...it needs some hacking to get it to run almost OK with a 1 GB of Ram.

There are several applications available to Windows and not to Linux. Winamp, MP3 Direct Cut, Replay Radio, I-Tunes, Volume Logic (outboard limiter/compression)...just to name a few.

Familiarity is another positive aspect of Windows, although its not the reason I am still use it.

The only reason I "like" Windows, is not because of Windows itself, but the software that is made for it. Adobe does not make Photoshop or After Effects for Linux nor are many commercial and popular games made for Linux (although it has some amazing games). Come to think of it though, I do enjoy fighting with Windows and trying to fix things in it but I like that in Linux as well. Mostly though, software. If all the software that is made for Windows, suddenly was made for Linux only, not many would be using Windows. I don't mind using Windows though, I would prefer to always use a Linux distro, but most of the time I have to use Windows. With enough tweaks, it runs fast... a lot of tweaking.

First of all my USB wifi dongle, which was not working at all in Ubuntu or any other distros that i could find on the web; surprise.......... It works on Windows :???:

Then.. flash animations, videos or whatever its format works better and faster on windows.

IMHO Windows appears to more stable and reliable to me than linux/unix and also less resource hungry(even when running fluxbox).

And also a good download manager, a Free download manager-Like...
that would be good to have something supporting the idea to allow having different proxy for each of the downloads on linux/unix.

You can do anything with Windows. Driver installs are very easy and so are driver upgrades. There is lots of Freeware and Open Source software available for it.

"I still like Windows, it gives me a lot to complain about".

(misquoted)

Yeah I know, no bashing in here :-)

Mery Christmas & a Happy new year

we all need choice! and we all need help! with windows you always need help!

in ubuntu it just "works" because we are used to trying to get help in windows we think it's the normal,

I installed ubuntu on my brand new high spec laptop in less than 20 mins & after a quick update it all works great,

and guess what i didn't need any help, i can do everything that i did on vista quicker & easier,

I feel confident & safe with my data on this OS,

It's even better on the net (faster) why who cares it just does everything faster,

I'm glad I made this choice, A big thankyou to ubuntu.

- It's familiar, I know EXACTLY where everything is and how it works, i'm still learning with Linux
- Professional quality software like Office 2007, and a wider choice of professional quality free software like Paint.NET
- Pretty much every piece of software in existance works on Windows.
- ease of installing software, .exe files FTW!

I like the array of quality applications, and free ones at that.
I also like how my video works very well compared to tearing on Linux.
The UI also seems smooth in transitions compared to the ones I've tried (with the exception of xfce without composition [very smooth]).

And lastly, a program like vLite which makes Windows just that more enjoyable when something goes wrong.
