View Full Version : Signature sometimes missing

This kind of fits with "placement of signature" and kind of not.
In this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?p=561912
my signature is fine in post #3, but missing in post #8

I also noticed this in some of my posts.

They installed a mod that only shows your sig once per page. Pretty useless imo since images aren't allowed anyways, thus you're only saving 2-3KB per page and almost no screen space.

They installed a mod that only shows your sig once per page. Was there an announcement about this? If so, I missed it.

That's the first I have heard about it.

Same here... I'd sort of been wondering about that.

I only noticed it because I was refreshing a page, and all of a sudden my sig disappeared. Then I noticed it was still on my earlier post, and the past two days experience has shown my earlier conjecture to be valid.

It's not a really big deal to me, but if a preference were to be stated it would be for having the sig on each post.

Yes, we do have the option of not showing sigs if we want to. I like to see them. :)

ya id vote to have the sig back, otherwise i end up with msgs to my forums account instead of my email.
I expect this to get changes since some mods and admins have Do not send me PM's or something like that in there sig, and well without that by page 2 they will be getting PMs from people who dont read the whole thread

A users signature will display "one" time per thread page. There is no need to have the extra text taking away from the content.

The fact remains, though, that usually the sig isn't what makes the post stretch... it's all that info to the left. Look at your post. Look at all the unused space below the signature. It would not add any additional space if the signature were or were not there; it only makes a difference for very large posts, and those are few.
At least make it a user option

Problem with an option is it probaly requires extra programing. I wouldent mind at all if I could just turn off the abbility for user to PM me via the forums and just have the PM linked to my email.
EDIT: The feature seems to be turned off now as I have 2 sigs in this thread.... wonder why?
Seth
December 12th, 2005, 12:34 PM
No, it's not turned off. That's the Quick Reply, which isn't smart enough to figure out that the mod is installed.
Refresh and you'll see the sig go away.

Test
EDIT: I stand corrected. which isn't smart enough There is no such thing as stupid programs ..... only stupid programers lol jk
EDIT2: It also comes back after an edit

Because of the way quick edit works correct it will show until the page is refreshed. When using quick edit or edit it actually doesnt reload the page it uses AJAX.
To answer the other questions.. I still don't see a need for multiple signatures on threads.

Is it just me or do we now get one signature per page?

To answer the other questions.. I still don't see a need for multiple signatures on threads. I do.
Frequently, I refer people "see the first link in my sig" if they want up-to-date repositories.
What if I'm doing that on page six of a thread, and I posted in page one of that thread as well? That person will say, "What sig?" And I'll have to say... oh, it's probably on page one somewhere...
If we're concerned about load times or clutter, you can chop the amount of space a sig can take up (what is it--250 characters now?), but I prefer to have my sig in every post--that's what a signature is. If it's in only one post, we might as well do away with signatures. Once per thread is a post. Once per post is a signature.

Is it that much more work to type out the link? I want sigs 2 but this is not a valid point IMO
*No offence was ment by this post and I hope none is taken*

Especially since 250 characters isn't that much and graphics aren't allowed.

Is it that much more work to type out the link? No, but why should I have to? How to install programs and how to enable extra repositories are two of the most frequently asked questions around here.
Why even have sigs if they're not going to show up in every post?

lol aysiu I think we know thats a like we both know that the question is "How can I log on as root?" (sorry couldent help my self)
All jokes asside:
Fair I by that, Other than to save screen space Is there any reason To remove the sigs?

I understand completely if the forums admins want to get rid of signatures completely--they do take up screen space.
However, I don't understand the idea of having one's signature appear only once per thread. That's just dumb.
It should be all or nothing.

I agree with ayisu. In my sig I put useful links for common questions I deal with and I refer to them quite often.
I know there are a lot of requests and programming considerations etc... but maybe there needs to be a section where I can enter links that show up in each post I make, limit it to how many links/characters can be there and keep a sig for what it should be, a signature.

Anyone? Or should have a text file on my desktop with my signature in it and copy and paste it on to the end of every message I post?

I think we are up to one sig per page, I can deal with that.

I think we are up to one sig per page, I can deal with that. Most of us (myself included) are too lazy to scroll up to read your sig or anyone else's. If it's not in the post I am reading it may as well not exist.

true
I still agree with aysiu I want my sig back. But its important to note that is highly unlikley that aysiu is going to enter a thread post three times then be like hey I can answer this question with my sig. It is usualy the first post that you tell people to see your sig. however this is not always the case so I would still like the sig back.

Most of us (myself included) are too lazy to scroll up to read your sig or anyone else's. If it's not in the post I am reading it may as well not exist. My point exactly. And if signatures take too long to load, cut the character limit down from 250 characters to something else.

This doesn't make any sense. If you are using a decent browser the page is sent in compressed form anyway which means more occurrences of the sig don't even increase the bandwidth used by the server. And if someone doesn't want to see them *at all* it's easy enough to set that option in the individual user's preferences.
One sig per page is utterly pointless.

Oh, another good reason to have it in every post...I have set the forums to display 30 posts per page so I have a LONG way to scroll up to see someone's sig if I wanted to.
