Hi all,

I need to keep some files in my HD (Kubuntu) and copies in a memory stick, but I want to encrypt them. I'd like to hear about some recommendations.

I need something that is easy and fast to set it up since I don't have the time to mess around, but I don't want to sacrifice security or safety either. Security is my ultimate goal.

Your opinions will be appreciated,

Thanks!

So what method would you use to encrypt? That's my question.

Thanks

If you are only going to encrypt specific files, I would recommend GnuPG.

And to throw another option out ....

Truecrypt is easy to use, well documented, and is available cross platform.

Truecrypt is good for directories or partitions. GnuPG is great for individual files. 7zip with AES encryption is a great way to make encrypted archives. LUKS is good for whole disk encryption. The first 3 mentioned above are cross platform.

I just love your new avatar! I confused the hell out of me though. Santa Kevdog!

To the OP:

I second Truecrypt. I has been working for me for years and it runs both under Linux & Windows which comes in handy sometimes, in particular if you want to share files. Truecrypt is one of the best open source apps that I know of.

As for OS encryption, just use the alternate CD as mentioned by hyper_ch.

I've used GnuPG with good success for years and if you're looking to store passwords I'd suggest a copy of KeePass also. Having both programs takes a lot of the tedium out of passwords and dealing with encryption (while still maintaining good, unique, passwords.)
