Ok, so for general browsing and applications, I'm loving Ubuntu. But, I'm a gamer at heart, so obviously I'd love to be able to use my Acer 5520G (the gaming edition, no less) to play games.
I originally had vista on here, which was just atrocious and left me largely unable to play most games. So I wiped it completely, and I now have Ubuntu 8.10 installed. I'm not dual booting, and seen as my copy of vista was on a partition which has now been wiped completely, I have no plans to dual boot.
I managed (with a LOT of tweaking and messing around) to get World of Warcraft and all it's expansions working in wine, but I'm not an experienced coder, so I wanted something a bit simpler to use.
I've now downloaded a 7 day trial for CrossOver Games, I'm more than happy to pay the £20 odd quid it works out at to use it, but sadly, I'm having nothing but issues with it!
Here's a snippet of the issues I've encountered.
I installed Spore Galactic Edition, and aside from it freaking out when I tried to install the EA manager the install went ok. But, sadly when I actually try to play I get an error box come up saying;
"The game can not start
There seems to be a problem contacting the license server. Ensure your
internet connection is active and try again in a few minutes."
I assure you, my internet connection is active, and I've been "trying again in a few minutes" for about 8 hours now.
So, I went to install Dreamfall, the longest journey, and the game after that, only to find here I couldn't get the installer to load AT ALL.
So I try Black and White 2. The installer works, I get it all installed, and guess what? I can't actually play the game. It begins to load, then just dissapears.
So, naturally I'm not particularly happy about paying £20 for an application that so far isn't working for me at all.
Has anyone else had this issue? What are my alternatives to wine and CrossOver? I'd heard of cedega, but after some searching on here I'd found plenty of negative reviews for it. Am I doing something wrong?

I have CrossOver and it's working perfectly for me. Your Spore problem sounds like the crap DRM is malfunctioning. Many people had a problem with that regardless of Operating System. I never buy anything with the EA logo on it. It's either going to have unbelievably ridiculous DRM, or extremely buggy.

As for the other games, I don't see them on the compatibility list on the CodeWeavers site, so they probably haven't been tested. You should try their forums/IRC and get support for them since you're entitled to it by purchasing their product. You can also get a support ticket, although I don't know if that system is for getting specific games running. I think it's mostly for support on CrossOver itself.

That being said, you can't expect every game to magically work. There are many games that don't work on Linux. CrossOver and Crossover games are simply a more user friendly WINE.

Thanks for the mention of CrossOver. Yeah, it's not a magic silver bullet yet, but it does run a lot of stuff, and more works all the time.

Regarding Spore, if you're a CrossOver Games customer, there's an unsupported build of CX Games that apparently runs it pretty well, or so my support ninjas tell me. If you need advice from them on what build that is, they can be contacted at our support ticket system.
