i am tryin to reintall Ubuntu 8.04.1 server edition to my home pc. i have always had ubuntu server on this mechine and it has worked perferctly. i have also had to reinstall the OS a few times before... as normal after booting the CD, is lets me select the language and 'insall server edition'. however after this it shows a full screen of white writing and indicats there is a 'kernel panic - not syincing: attempted to kill the idle task!' message. i have formatted the HDD with a seperate program, just incase it was a file or corrupt part on the HDD however the same message still appears..

any ideas what i can do as i need to get it up and running ASAP as it is a DNS with 12 pc's relying on this for login

PC info:
pentium 4
512MB RAM

Thanks for any responces

(appologies for any dodgy spelling too)

Why would you have to constantly reinstall? It's almost never necessary to fix problems. The only time I do a fresh install is when "upgrading" the OS.

It sounds like you have a hardware problem to me. Have you tried installing in text mode?

Sorry, it's available on the alternate install CD as an install menu choice. Just download the alternate CD and boot. Pick text mode install.

Here is a link to the alternate CD:
