Hello all!

I have a nice machine in my basement that is a working as a web server, database server, ftp, and many more. Currently I'm running Ubuntu Server 8.04 x86 and everything is working great.
I'm planning to upgrade this machine, and reinstall the operating system.

The question is: should I install Ubuntu Server x86 or x64? Any advantages or disadvanteges for x64?

The machine configuration will be: Pentium D820 SmithField (Dual Core), some GigaByte motherboard, 2 x 1 GB DD2 800 dual channel, 2 x 640GB HDD :guitar:.

Thank you!

I would tend to say stick with x86. 64 bit is not always better, and sometimes can actually slow a system down. Unless you are doing graphics rendering or some other hugely math intensive operations, generally, x86 is faster, and definitely more compatible with software. There are still some things out there that don't play well with 64 bit systems yet.

Addressing more than 4 gig of memory is a plus for 64, but doesn't apply in your case.

You say everything is working great, if it aint broke,.. don't fix it :lolflag:

Thanks for your quick answers. So it seems I don't need x64, so I will stick to x86 :).

There is nothing to fix. I just need to do a hardware upgrade :).
