Hi,
there are lots of cards out there in the market, but I heared that even 2 year old cards are faster on linux because of the horrible drivers than very new ones. Is there a favorite among them (comparing the performance in practice with drivers and so on)?
Are NVIDIA cards faster than ATIs? Is it true that an ATI 9200 may be faster than a 9700 pro?

Im not sure that it's so much that they are faster, it's just that Nvidia has better support than ATI does on Linux. Nvidia is the way to go when using Linux from personal experience and from what most people say.

Nowadays, Nvidiaz Cards are much better that Atiz. The 7800GTX is the fastest card existing. But the real problem is the fact that Ati's drivers really sucks on Linux.
So even if your ATI card is a good one (I've got a X700mobility), a weaker Nvidia card may run faster on the same box because of drivers issues.
That's the way it is for the moment.

Look at the 6600GT or 6800, there is no need for a 7800GTX.

Nvidia.
Personally, I have a 6600 with dual dvi. It is cooled without a fan, so it is nice a quiet, and powerful enough to play all the games I want.
