Terse: What are some good programming community hubs that aren't language or project specific? (Besides here obviosly, which looks like a nice little niche)
Long: I've written scripts for a while, but I've never gotten into the ``hacker'' community. I've found to get better at scripting writing projects is the best option, but like most things in life writing projects and learning stuff works best in groups. So I was wondering what are some good ways to find communities of coders. Personally I've tried before, but I always seem to end up at a huge impersonal site or find some group of people who don't actually write anything, but like to pretend they ``might'' do something... like maybe build a turing machine.
To clarify, I'm not looking for an uber-hacker club, just somewhere people actually interested in programming talk(like here), and where small to medium-size projects start up. With programmers who can stand their ground when asked what simple things like recursive functions or design patterns are. However, not specific to any area. Preferably in one place, but it could be spread out.
I don't know, maybe no such place exists. I just have a hard time being tied down to one area. Short of answering me a utopian community like above(community, not neccesarily forum). Some ideas on how to find smaller coding communities might be good, or just some pointers to general programming communities(not resources). Last but not least, short of everything else, I would mind hearing about general experiences with communities and your ideas on what makes on good... I'm just a lonely coder right now.
