Hi, I have a new Presario CQ50 with 8.10 installed and I've got everything working just dandy except the touchpad disable button.
I had assumed this was simply a mechanical on and off switch but apparently it's software controlled. I'm was able to disable the mousepad under windows but that went away.
The light on the button changes color when I press it but the mouse seems to keep working. I'm a sloppy ham-fisted typist so though it's not a huge problem I have managed to tap the buttons a few times and found myself typing in the middle of a different paragraph.
This is my first laptop with a disable button so I don't have a clue where to start, any ideas? Thanks.

I've got a cq70 presario with the same feature. The light changes color, the pad still works. I don't have a solution yet either, though you can likely disable it permanantly with the BIOS menu at startup - not really a great option if you travel without mouse.
I'll add that I don't understand what it is that activates the pad, perhaps the hair on my wrist? And, believe it or not I have seen it twice, and the second time I was closely watching... I was using KOPETE and had a recurring problem of the buffer/clipboard pasting into the window. Now, that should take several actions or keystrokes on my part! Here's the belive it or not part: I rebooted and it still had the same info in the clipboard, and it continued to paste it into the new session. The reboot was a shutdown/power -off. Then I restarted. I'm running a Mepis Linux based on 7.9.92-beta5.iso

That wouldn't work all the time when he wants to turn it off to type! I have a similar laptop presario v2000 and on mine it is a hardware switch!

Yes, mine is also a hardware switch. Anyone hear of a driver that might support it?
I suspect the System>Preferences>Mouse "third tab" is related to the Ubuntu distro, my Mepis distro is a little different and does not have the disable touchpad visible on any of the mouse tabs. I don't see a touchpad config about. It would be interesting to disable it - to see if it cures my issue. I suspect though, that some combination of keystrokes is my culprit (of my clipboard paste). Fyi, second reboot and the info is still in the clipboard!

Ohh... its been a month or three, and I am forced to use this Compaq Presario CQ70 laptop with Mepis... and there is nothing so terrible as this keyboard/keypad. It is uncontrollable, frequently pasting crap in sentences and deleting/blowing away web pages before their time... it's no longer a tool, it is an anchor made of lead and frustration.
Perhaps I will once again endeavor to find a workable solution to disabling the touchpad via the hardware button, in hopes that it is the culprit of the random pastes and web page switching etc. I did try editing xorg.conf etc, but have had no luck yet.
