I have recently decided that I would like to try and help out the ubuntu community by becoming a MOTU. I have watched the youtube vidoes that you can get from here: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/Videos and I have read the basic packaging guide on the MOTU wiki. I am a first year computer scientist and more years experience than that. Therefore I feel that I can help.

However, even after that, i don't know what to help with. Or still how to do so. I know, generally, how i'm supposed to fix a package but I don't know which package to get...or if i'm even looking at the right ones. Heck, i'm really pretty lost. So what I need is somebody to point me in the right direction. Where do I go now? What steps do I take to actually help?? Should I get a MOTU mentor even though I may not be able to help that often?

A good idea would be to talk to the guys in #ubuntu-motu on Freenode. They will till you everything you need to know and someone will probably be willing to guide you through making your first patch. Another place to look is at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MOTU/GettingStarted.

@Jay Li: MOTU means "Master Of The Universe", which means "an Ubuntu developer that can upload directly to the Universe component of the repositories". (Universe is 99% of everything you can install from the repositories, that isnt on an official ubuntu cd). Basically its an Ubuntu developer.

Hmmm, I might just go on the ubuntu-motu freenode. It never hurt to talk. I've already looked at atleast 90% of the getting started stuff.

Thanks. I'll go see if that works.
