I would like to remotely administer a 8.10 server with Gnome administration tools like users-admin. It seems like Ubuntu does not have their act together on this.

Does anyone know of a howto for resumable Gnome sessions on 8.10 server version. There are many posts for older versions, but I know things have changed since then. My old standard was to ssh in, then fire up VNC. The "remote" feature in Administration menu only works if you have a gui running on the console and user is already logged in on console (seems silly).

The idea of having a remote GUI on a server seems a little absurd to me, but you can start a vnc session from the command line. Do you need the VNC session to be the active session on the server displayed on the server's monitor?
