View Full Version : [ubuntu] [SOLVED] Occasional lock up?

Although I've not really noticed a pattern, my old Dell latitude running ubuntu 7.10, occasionally locks up. My main query is that I'm wondering if there's a way to force my way into the terminal or to "unfreeze" it at this point?

The most recent scenario was this:
It was playing music (a screenlet), it went into power save mode (screen went black). This is typically not a problem as the music continues... this time, the music continued for awhile and then, when a song started... it suddenly stopped and my attempts to wake it up, failed. The only thing I can figure is to force it to turn off (hold down power button).. and I don't like this.

to shutdown or restart Ubuntu safely after its locked up you can use The magic SysRq keys:

I assume this will solve it... I'll try it out next time I lock up. (or rather next time my computer locks up)
