Directly accessing the microphone on Linux

I would like to use a library like ALSA to access the microphone from C or C++. How would I go about doing this?

maybe lurk over at the ALSA project website. They have some tutorials and stuff that you may want to try. http://www.alsa-project.org/main/index.php/Tutorials_and_Presentations. You probably want to hit them up if you have specific problems.
