heyas guys I'm new to the community. Just installed breezy 5.10 and installed my ATI drivers with little problem. My question is now whether to use wine or cedega. Is there an advantage performance wise with Cedega over Wine? What are the basic pro's and con's? Also has anyone tried to run Planetside from what I've read it doesn't sound too promising. Other games I'd be running would be DAoC and HL2 mods..

thanks for any info guys it's good to be here..

I beleive that cedaga supports activeX hardware acceleration while wine does not.

This is not true at all. Wine has full DirectX 9 support. (ActiveX is something different entirely.)

Try Wine first. There are many programs (games included) that work better in Wine, and many don't even work at all in Cedega. Wine is developing at a faster rate than Cedega too, so the things that are in Wine's favor are only to get even more in Wine's favor as time goes on. Wine's also free.

Wine is free. Cedega is pay per month.

I would suggest you wine first maybe wine-cvs you can check on this forum how to install it.
Also I would indicate that i have found couple of games that officially works on cedega but they just wont start on my Ati IGP 345. (games are mafia, max payne2 tropico2 gta series etc)

I noticed that the ubuntu version of wine at winehq.org was updated to .9.3 today -- before it was even mentioned on the main site. Wonderful.

I accidentally left the repositories setup and got a message on saturday about new updates available and a major surprise (to me at least) it was wine 0.9.3!!

For the games you want to run, ShadyPete, I think Cedega would be the way to go. In particular the HL2 stuff, because Steam is constantly being updated and those updates tend to stop the game running on Cedega, after which the Cedega team follow quite closely with updates that allow the game to run again. I can't imagine what it would be like to keep an updated STEAM game running on wine. I havent heard of it being done with any success anyway.

You don't really need to make a choice anyway. Run both. :)

I use Cedega for gaming and I use wine to run stuff like Picasa2, Paintshop Pro and Internet Explorer.
