Why do people pay to get such a crap OS called Vista. I have it on my PC and its the worst operating system ever. As for Office i find absolutely no need to pay the mad sums of money. Then why do people still buy it?

Most people don't pay for Vista it comes with their new computers installed.
Office 2007 they think they need, when for most Open Office would suffice.

what ? they still pay, the price is included in the cost of the computer; there were a lot of discussions about re-founds and windows EULA....

Yes I know most computers come with Windows Vista installed but should'nt the manufacturers be aware and see the benefits of Linux? They can reduce the price of Laptops and Desktops by $DOLLARS$!! And they can still keep Windows optional for the foolish people who still want it!):P

Any OEM who offers Windows as an "optional extra" will get smaller/no rebates from Microsoft. This increases the cost of including Windows, and the store or manufacturer becomes less competitive.
This is against the spirit of the law in many countries, but it's not against the letter of the law because it involves rebates, not the actual buy price of a Windows license.
To answer the other question, people pay for Microsoft Office 2007 because either they don't know of the compatible alternatives, or they don't believe that Openoffice.org is compatible enough. Windows people spread a lot of FUD about OOo's compatibility with MS-Office documents.
Please call it "Microsoft Office" or "MS Office" - if you just refer to it as "Office 2007", you're not helping anyone to realise that there's a non-Microsoft alternative.

They do it because windows / ms-office is a de facto standard. Everybody uses it, so it is a huge advantage to have a compatible product. And, also, time and effort has to be spend on learning how to use openoffice. whereas most people already have some knowledge on ms-office. The chance that the time and effort spend on openoffice will pay off in other places (for example at work), is relatively small, since as said ms-office is the standard.
The reason that companies use mainly microsoft / ms-office is the same: when they would decide to start using linux and openoffice, a lot of previously acquired experience of their employees would be useless, so a lot of time would have to be devoted to learn how to use the new systems. Therefore, linux and openoffice have huge nonmonetary costs.

what? i hear this argument a lot in the windows world but is FUD.
What kind of a moron would have trouble making the text bold or centering it just because the icons are an inch or so away than in ms-office. I notice that in many jobs they as for "word" - it's because they're idiots, MS Word is a text editing application for crying out loud, do you need a degree to press the bold sign or change the text sizes ?
