laptop lcd issues

i have a Compaq nc6000 with an ATI driver. when i close my laptop lid the screen does not go off. i am running Ubuntu 8.10.

check the setting in:

System-> Preferences-> Power Management

Also look for known bugs and work arounds in launchpad
