I am looking to turn an old Compaq computer into a file server that would mean that i could keep all my music, videos and photos stored on.

i have looked arund and asked some questions on other sites and was told about ubuntu. however i have never used linux, and so would never know how to set it up as a file server. can anyone help me.

also i want to know how i could dual boot ubuntu server edition with windows XP and how i could go about being able to access it remotely ithout being on the local network

i know it is a lot to ask but thanks in advance.

I've used this site to set up a server before. I never access mine from outside my own network though, and I don't bother with a dual boot. To be honest I don't really see the point of having XP on your server. I put my server in the corner and never turn it off.
