How Does LiveUSB work?

hey all,

this is a curiousity question mostly. How does LiveUSB work without formatting the usb drive? is a seperate partition created on the usb drive and used as the boot partition?

I used USBLive = gparted-live-0.3.9-4.iso with UNetbootin --> no special partitions, works fine even under Windows - just a lot of files in the root of drive
