modem not dected

Hi,
I'm new to Ubuntu and I downloaded Ubuntu 8.04 LTS from the internet and installed it.I'm not getting connection to the internet and the modem is not being detected.
Pl help me on how to solve this problem.

in windows did you use a dialer to connect to the internet or does the internet work as soon as the modem is switched on?? go to the terminal and type ifconfig and post output

the connection i use in windows is a broadband connection where we have to enter our user name and password only and we can surf the net.

please post full ifconfig output.. copy and paste it ... is your modem's ip address 192.168.1.1?
