Maybe because most archers post in the screenshot thread in the community cafe or on the Arch forums? ;P
Anyway, mine. My Dust-E theme, Songbird with YABS theme, E17 WM, ZSH shell, can't remember where I got the wallpaper, Conky, and Feh was used to set the background after setting it in E17 so that conky and other psuedo-transparent apps could look transparent.

This man speaks truth! However, I will post my desktop anywhere I can, so here it is:
I like it!
Arch Linux x86_64

WM Theme: Arch Blue
Modified to my liking

Yeah, I know..... I'm one of them! I just thought an Arch desktop thread would be sorta cool in this sub-forum..... and another way to show off my new theme! haha.
I also thought that we could use bigger thumbnail images since there will be less people posting. My images might have been too large at 800 x 600 pixels, so maybe the elmer_42 size image of 640 x 480..... or whatever.... this thread will probably fall off the bottom of the forum and disappear like most my threads.

My Xfce desktop is as dark & easy on my eyes as I can make it. I use an Aero theme that I spent some time modifying using Gcolor2 to help with the hex translation.
Worker isn't quite as easy on the eyes, but I can quickly find what I need to with the contrasting buttons.

Xfce ftw. I think it's safe to say that Shiki-Colors is the best gtk theme I've used. It's just awesome.
Wallpaper's from Ergo Proxy.

+1
I've never been as comfortable with any OS or distro as I am with Arch/Xfce.
I hope the Xfce dev's don't add too much to it in the future & ruin the beautiful simplicity of it.
Someone somewhere can improve dramatically the handling of desktop colours in GTK+ themes though! We shouldn't have to spend hours with a hex <-> colour translator to modify the desktop/window colour scheme.

if you do take a shot at kde, at least try kde3 (slax is great for it). i can't believe what they've done to themselves. superkaramba must have caught someone cheating on his/her spouse.

Eh I'm a traitor. I'm giving Ubuntu a little test period again (we'll see how it goes). GNOME feels comfy and "complete" after my Arching, I admit. Probably because I don't trust myself to know what all I need :lolflag: Still, I don't think I'll stay long. Already it's annihilating my battery.
One nice thing Arch did for me: thanks to the /home partition I'm a lot less concerned about tossing whatever distro on here I fancy.

you can still try slax as it is primarily a live cd. you can run it in ram so that you can still use your cdrom and it's very fast.

Yeah... I'm torn. I've noticed I can get things like AWN running better on Ubuntu than I could on Arch, but man oh man I'm not liking the system at large. Admittedly I could use a reformat in general, I've got way too many conflicting config files floating around now.

I like pacman, but makepkg is what makes it all worthwhile for me. Its so easy to make packages if you have a little knowlege of compiling and shell scripting, versus on Debian you have to learn a whole bunch of extra stuff.

there are some things that don't work so well with it (mc, for one), but it's great for purges when in the console (you know, pacman -Q on one side and pacman -Rs on the other).

That's pretty cool for an old computer
EDIT I've always wanted to ask this: what does "Motho ke motho ka botho" mean anyway?
http://kmandla.wordpress.com/about/
I speak Setswana (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tswana_language) and Sesotho (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sesotho_language) (southern Sotho) with a fair amount of fluency. I picked the blog name years ago when I thought no one would be looking, and now it's just stuck. Can't change it; that would rock the boat.

40km up the coast from Durban (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Durban).

WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOW! How did you make Xfce look like that? Can you give me some tips?
+1
Thank you both. For making xfce4 look like that:
Murrine-svn theme. I make my own, same for the Emerald theme.
Hydroxygen icons (then add the leopard gtk-back/forward buttons in to replace the other buttons).
Use the cario patch for true transparency for the xfce4-panel.
Edit all screenlet python scripts to use the same font and same colors..... also edit the background.svgs to look better using Inkscape. (background images using the same color..... I also make the pager image a bit wider so the boxes don't show off the side of the image)

The package that is supposed to be in the AUR is not there anymore...is it possible that you may send be the package if you have it?

Here is the download link: http://www.loculus.nl/xfce/files/panel-cairo.patch
and the xfce4 page that it is from: http://blog.xfce.org/?p=177
In the patch, you will have to edit the version numbers from 4.4.2 to 4.4.3 and I found it was easier to edit the patch to use the "diff -ur" command for all of the patches paths and using the exact directory path for each of the patches.
Let me know if this works for you..... if it doesn't I can post my edited patch and PKGBUILD.

I was about to write the detailed instructions down until I saw that this pkg was still in the AUR: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22081
It seems pretty current and up to date, give it a try and let me know if it works..... if not then I will post my edited patch and PKGBUILD

Are you clicking on the tarball?
This should download everything for you: http://aur.archlinux.org/packages/xfce4-panel-cairo/xfce4-panel-cairo.tar.gz
Then unpack the tar.gz, and run makepkg.
I haven't used this package so let me know if it builds properly.

gjoellee.... the patch in my post above is for the "regular" xfce4-panel package from ABS and not the AUR package that you got the 404 error from.....
So your command if you are using pacbuilder would be:
sudo pacbuilder -Skbve xfce4-panel
then when you edit your xfce4-panel PKGBUILD, replace it with mine above (or just add the patch line).... then before you save it with "ctrl+O"/enter/ctrl+X"..... make sure you place the "panel2.patch" in the correct directory:
/tmp/pacbuilder/build/xfce4-panel/panel2.patch
This should work. Let me know the results..... (also.... the compiz-fusion "blur" plugin will make it look much better.)

You have to use a compositor like xfce4's xfwm compositing (Window Manager Tweaks).... or use compiz-fusion.
That is how it will go to clear.

Okay, lets fix this issue and your Compiz/emerald problem (your other thread) at the same time.
Try doing this:
1.) Re-install the xfce4-panel WITHOUT the patch
2.) Stop using the ~/gtkrc-2.0 that you are using.
3.) Try to get compiz-fusion and emerald working properly
a. Use the fusion icon in the system tray to make emerald default window manager
b. or if a. doesn't work then - Run this command in "alt + f2" (not terminal): emerald --replace
c. If neither of these work try to use compositing in xfce4 with xfwm
d. If that isn't working either then you will have to fix your xorg.conf probably to allow compositing.
4.) If we were able to get compositing working (either xfce4/xfwm4 or compiz/emerald).... then un-install the xfce4-panel plugins:
a. System Tray
b. Icon Box
5.) Rebuild the xfce4-panel with patch and install it..... it should change to clear instantly at the moment you install it.

The patch shouldn't affect anything differently..... other than the xfce4-panel.
What panel plugins are you using?
And are you still using your panel ~/.gtkrc-2.0 ?
I don't think a clean install should matter compared to an install that's been used for a while.....

Chakra is just Arch+KDEmod (whch it should be), but with graphical install full of eye candy adn you get a working live cd. Chakra can save people a lot of time since the the desktop is ready after a fresh install.

They are the xfce4-panel plugins (that don't work good with the patch)..... you don't have to un-install them or anything.... just don't use them with the patched panel.
Also, it is good that your xfce4 compositing works..... that means that your xfce4-panel with the patch should work..... if it doesn't show as a clear panel then you didn't patch it correctly.

Thank you.
Could you point me in the direction of getting that on my computer? Icons and all. That desktop is dead sexy. ;)
I will make a post with details. I get a lot of questions about it so I guess I should share the info. The main thing is the xfce4-panel is patched for transparency and that just makes everything else look better.
Then you can't really go wrong with the hydroxygen icon pack from gnome-looks (using the aqua folders). I replace a few of the gtk-back/forward buttons with the mac buttons for my browser and Thunar.... and I create my own custom folders for the panel launchers using GIMP.
As for the gtk theme it is the murrine-svn gtk engine which is very easy to write a gtkrc for. This is one my themes that I made that was influenced from the MurrineGlow and Shiki-Colors themes available on gnome-looks.org.... just download one of those and modify it with your own colors and customizations using these settings (even newer settings for svn version): http://www.cimitan.com/murrine/options
And the screelets are the basic screenlets except I edit the python scripts to use the same font and colors.... also, I change the "background.svg" images to all use the same color (and also the Archxfce4 logo).
The conky script is one I've been using for a few years now.
The emerald theme from the picture you posted is something I made from modifying the "glow" theme and adding different buttons (and different colors and settings to add the glossy fade at the top).
Also for that picture I used a Firefox userchrome for the tab-bar background. (My newest theme doesn't need it because I switched the gradient around to blend into the bg_NORMAL color..... I never like how the default gradient and glaze style goes light to dark on the toolbar and then back to light for the tab-bar.)

Still looks good. That panel looks like the best Linux panel out.... I've never used KDE and am pretty comfortable with xfce4..... so I plan on staying with it (xfce4.4.6 will be out soon)..... but every time I see that panel app and plasma, I start to wish that xfce4 would add some new style to their Desktop Environment.

I am actually happier with my desktop then I've ever been. I'm just waiting for the murrine-svn RGBA true transparency project to be perfected so that the entire desktop theme can be clear with beautiful text and widgets.
I messed around with the RGBA = TRUE with some of my murrine-svn themes, and I added the patches and plugins for certain apps..... but if felt slow and reminded me of Vista when moving windows around..... plus most of the patches/plugins were for gnome.

I think the reason people asked was because YOUR customizations look so good. Saying "here, you can build your own" is like if I'm at someone's house and ask for the recipe after a good meal and they just hand me a bag of ingredients, saying "you can make it to your own tastes!"

Well, I know I was sort of giving the lazy answer..... but being a chef for the last 15 years I would probably point out that as long as you have the same ingredients as me, and sort of know your way around your kitchen.... that even if you do not make the exact same dish, your dish will probably still taste good and look close to the same.... and the more times that you make the dish the better it will get and your own individual style will emerge.
So I wouldn't explain to you about caramelizing, deglazing a pan, reducing, or how to saute propely.....
Now if someone said that they had absolutely no idea on how to cook and they wanted to learn, then I would suggest getting a nice cookbook and getting their hands dirty with some trial and error.... I might even walk them through the process.
..... which is sort of what I did.
See, the murrine theme engine is one of the easier ones to customize yourself. Just download a murrine theme that you like.
Copy that original theme, and give it a new name. Now edit your new theme's gtkrc.
Change all of the colors ("#CCCCCC") to the colors that you want to use. Most new themes have a simple line at the top of the gtkrc called:
gtk_color_scheme =
If it doesn't use that then edit the hex colors in the:
style "theme-default"
They will be the parts that say:
bg[NORMAL] = "#CCCCCC"
Now you can also edit the settings in the:
engine "murrine"
That is the link that i gave: http://www.cimitan.com/murrine/options
And you can even edit the settings in:
style "theme-default"
http://live.gnome.org/GnomeArt/Tutorials/GtkThemes
http://live.gnome.org/GnomeArt/Tutorials/GtkEngines
I've even written a guide for the xfce4-engine themes (way back in 2007)..... it's old, not complete, and not very accurate.... but it still worked for the xfce4 themes: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=377397

Conkyrc's: Search the conky thread for them, I'm too lazy to find them myself. :P
What you see running: gnome-terminal, gedit, and gcalctool (I know, all heavy for E17, but I do use light apps too :P).
How is E these days?

Quite stable, actually. I do keep an eye on OzOs's forum, though, since between them and I we are pretty good at spotting errors and bad builds. By the way, I should note I don't use E17 from the arch repos, I instead use my own easy-e17 (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=22793) and oz-e17-tools (http://aur.archlinux.org/packages.php?ID=23227) packages.

Desktop final. I think I'll be sticking with this setup for a long time.
GTK: seriously color-swapped and tweaked ASN
OB: Started as Elachisto, but I've changed it so much it's my own thing, in this case modified to match ASN perfectly
Icons: ALLGREY
Wallpaper: Floating Tree or something from DeviantArt
Tint2
Conky
Trayer
Cursor: Neutral Plus Inverted (though you can't see it)
I had to piddle around a lot to get Trayer/Tint2/Conky all working on the same line without interfering with one another AND take up the same vertical space. I notice that windows maximize based on Tint's size, so the purpose of screen #3 is to show how excellent fullscreen browsing is now.:guitar:

Yes, I've been hearing that the final release might actually be a reality. More time is being spent on the project, and recently there was a 1.0.0 release of the EFL (i think?).
I'm happy about it because E17 has always been a favorite of mine :) While I don't use it as my DE, I drool over what it can do on older machines, and how it provides bling with virtually any crappy hardware.

For the patched xfce4-panel? Yes.... also for the Emerald theme.

I made Compiz working with my Xfce installation, and now I have further customized by desktop:
