First off, did you install it with the linux installer? Download it at http://www.liflg.org also, you may want to go ahead and install the latest version of wine. You can just add

deb http://wine.sourceforge.net/apt/ http://wine.sourceforge.net/ahttp://wine.sourceforge.net/apt/ binarypt/ binary/binary/
inside of synaptic, or /etc/apt/sources.list.

Then of course the reload, and update them.

I played the whole game through on Debian Sid with this method, the only problems with it was the occasional ugly texture on cars and such. Other than that, it worked quite fast (played it at 1600x1200 with all settings maxed) but then again, it's a pretty old game, and I have a 6800GT

I had the same problem, it's been awhile, so forgive my memory. Download the no-cd crack from www.megagames.com, that's what I did. Then it works fine. There was also something I had to do to get the ultra gore mode to activate, but I can't recall what it was. Google should provide that answer.

If you want to play online your might have some issues with Punkbuster. There is PB for linux but it is for native games and servers

Just copy th sof2sp.exe over the one in the sof2 directory (or make a back up of it first, then do it) then just run it with wine.
