I noticed a new file had been created in /home/myusername on my server.
The file is named a.out

That is a compiled program. the a.out is a generic name which does not tell you what was compiled to run.

but on the bright side you could always enter ./a.out which will cause the program to execute. only problem is you don't know what the program is suposed to do.

look at the files in the directory for any *.cpp files.

Right a.out is the default name for a compiled program. The file doesn't necessarily have to be .cpp it can also be other languages such as .c
