incase your wondering the pc im testing it on is a pentium 4 3.4Ghz HT, with 1.5 gig ram, poineer dvd writer, and the hdd for testing purposed is a 20 gig ide samsung. nothing flash, but enough for me to test with, and nvidia fx5500 256 meg video card, and using onboard sound

Elyssa is based on ubuntu 8.04 and after the horror story i had with opensuse 11 i had high expectations of Linux Mint and i must say, i was not dissapointed

the install is very straight forward and if you have installed ubuntu before this is a walk in the park and you can do it pretty much with your eyes closed

open install the hdd (over writing opensuse 11, yee-haw) i was presented with a very professional looking login screen

i logged in and was presented with a very neat looking desktop.
once thing i noticed straight away as there is only one taskbar at the bottom of the screen and thats it. there is no rubbish bin shown for delete of data, and there is no desktop switcher in the lower right corner of the screen.
i thought, these things must be fixxed pronto. so right click to lower taskbar and add a rubbish bin, and presto a neat little blue rubbbihs bin appears.
also right click on the task bar and add extra workspaces, presto

i also read in the release notes you need to change the sources file so i did this too, read about it here (http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_elyssa.php) just do a search on "Change your APT sources" and follow the instructions and you will be right

i thought i would get smart and flick on compiz so i head over to appearance and set effects to "holloywood aint got nothing" and it has a spit and says it cant be done as my video card is not setup... DOH! my bad

in a very short time there was an icon appear and it says i need to use restricted drivers to enabale my nvidia fx5500 video card. i click on it and let it download its files it needs and restart pc

log back in and this time i decided to have another at turning on desktop effects and it worked straight up, you rippa.
there is now compiz icon on tool bar so i head off to add remove programs and add the compiz icon and download it via synaptic. while in synaptic i also grabbed some themes for emerald and i also added emerald while i was at it.
restarted pc again, just from force of habbit and no compiz icon shown on toolbar but i go and double click on it and presto, compiz it up and 3d cube is running.
right clicked on compiz set window decorator to emerald and go and poick an emerald theme , exit, restart pc cos i want to see if these settings "stick" cos in 8.10 i had devils job at getting it to stick with the new drivers.

restart and double click on compiz and open a window and presto, everything works as it should.so i open up the session window and add the compiz icon to session so that when the pc restarts it will starup compiz auto magically and i restart pc. im keen to see if ti "stick" as agian i had a heel of a time getting it to stuck in 8.10

anyhow, restart pc and login and and wel what do ya know, it stuck and open windows and presto, compiz is running and so to is emerald, yeehaw!! eat your heart out opensuse 11, this is how easy it should be

feeling quite cocky right about now i grab a dvd and throw at it and what do you know i didnt even have to d/l any drivers it just starts playing straight up, yee-haw!!!

i decided to go and install a pdf printer and just check first and see if it is theore or not and what do you know, it has been installed by default... YOU LITTLE RIPPA!!!

man, this is how easy it should be, this is awseome!

im practially going cartwheels by now as you could well imagine

i setup my canon i865 printer and test and it works fine with cups and i also test my canon lide20 usb scanner and it also runs fine

i checked out the software portal and installed a few apps, very nice and easy just click the install now button and let it donwload away, man,m easier then falling off a log, awesome stuff. love it

i have a few more operatig systems to take for spin when they finsih d/l but im really impressed with Linux Mint, it rocks. i cant wait for the final release of Elyssa. top stuff

Why did you try RC1 of Linux Mint 5 (Elyssa)?

Elyssa's about to become old news with LM6 (Felicia) on the horizon, in fact RC1 of Felicia is already out. Give that a try; apparently it's pretty much ready for final release.

Anyway, good to hear you've found a distro that suits you :) I'm a fan of Mint too, and prefer it over Ubuntu when introducing new users to Linux.

Fair enough, each to his own :)
