And I don't mean just barely, I mean like you could use the Internet or do word processing...

A laptop that shuts down by itself every time it's on for around 20 minutes.

I just managed to get Ubuntu installed before it shut down and can use it perfectly for around 15-20 minutes, then it dies.

You mean like it's broken/decrepit, or just crappy specs?

Two weeks ago I installed Intrepid on a dual Pentium2 400Mhz system with 512MB Ram, with root on a software-RAID1 comprised of two SCSI drives. I had to tweak the rootdelay boot parameter. Otherwise the system wouldn't wait the necessary 50 seconds for all its drives to become initialised. Apart from that all went well.
I'm using this machine right now, by the way. (still need to get repair parts for my regular PC)
Even Skype calls are possible, although I can only receive but not send a webcam video, since the P2 doesn't seem to know the necessary instruction sets.
Surfing works quite well (including flash videos), as does OpenOffice.

A few months ago I also tried Xubuntu on a 300Mhz Pentium 2 Sony Vaio laptop, but its 64MB of Ram made working with it barely possible.
But I'm sure it would fly with Damn Small Linux or something comparably small.

Today I have Debian with Fluxbox running on the Nintendo Wii.

Other than that, the retarded computer I have running next to me.

Bad specs mostly.

this one (tongue in cheek sort of). The Inspiron 1100 hates Linux as much as I love it.

I got it working on a laptop with a P3 and 256 mb of RAM. Stupid thing doesn't like to charge.

Check this thread out - http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=478237.

A few months ago I installed BasicLinux 3.5 (Linux kernel 2.4 something) on a 75 MHz 486 with 8 Mb of RAM. If you really wanted to, you could use links -g to browse the web with graphics, but it was really, really slow. Abiword also worked for word processing, but it was rather laggy (about one or two second delay from when you typed to when the words would show up). I didn't try anything too complicated with it though, not sure how it would have handled that.

I got a live CD running on a 233 MHZ Pentium II, 160 MB of RAM laptop. Not too impressive, I know.

Ubuntu 6.06 on a Compaq Pentium II 400 with 4 GB SCSI drive and 128 MB RAM. It ran pretty comfortable frankly enough..

I have BasicLinux 3.5 (kernel 2.2 mind you) running on a 133MHz PI, with 16MB RAM and a 1GB HDD.

zmjjmz has me beat, but nonetheless...

Arch Linux on a Pentium 3 w/ 64MB SD-RAM.

It chokes on Firefox + wmii. But I really meant for it to be a server of some sort. What sort, I haven't decided yet.

This, my only computer. Compaq presario laptop, 1.5ish gigs of ram and 80 gig HD space xD.
Ubuntu runs like a dream tho.

That's considered bad?

My current one has 2GBs of RAM and 51 GBs of HD space and it'll run pretty much any game out nowadays. I haven't upgraded the processor or the graphics card, just boosted the RAM from 512MB to 2GB.

I have one of those! It doesn't seem to mind Hardy, but it's slow as molasses. I'm thinking about finding a slimmer windows manager. Gnome is a bit heavy for it.

I used to run Fedora Core 1 on a P3 with 64MB RAM. It ran Gnome and KDE, but was very slow.

I have a similar computer that runs DSL at decent speeds.
